TOURS

UDRI Research Tour
Date: Monday, May 23rd
Time: afternoon
Duration: 1.5 hrs
Location: UDRI River Campus (same building as workshop)
Description:
The Power to Explore Mars and Beyond!
Power is required in everything we do, and space exploration is no exception.  Exploring deep space or a planet’s surface requires a reliable energy source.  Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs) have been providing the power for NASA to explore the solar system and beyond since the late 1950’s.  The newest RTG, the Multi-Mission RTG (MMRTG), is powering the Curiosity Rover currently on Mars.  This tour will provide information about the newest RTG design and the performance/life testing currently being conducted on the MMRTG Engineering Unit (life cycle testing, Mars phase) and the Qualification Unit (Cruise phase) at UDRI’s River Campus.
Robust Power Systems Lab
The advance of technologies in power electronics, energy storage, and control create new opportunities in the design of microgrids for mission critical purposes such as in Navy ships, More Electric Aircraft (MEA), and spacecraft.  For these applications, the level of reliability required makes it necessary to have robust control algorithms in place to monitor and maintain the power systems without significant human intervention.  In this tour, we will show efforts at the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) to develop a real time simulation platform for the testing of control techniques to enhance the current status of these microgrids.
